Arctic Odyssey

This was the manifestation of a dream for me.
As a communist child, I was obsessed with adventure stories in forbidding territories. I devoured
the works of Jack London, E. A. Poe, A. Dumas, Jules Verne, H.G Wells.
In 2014, I was accepted to the Arctic Circle Residency — a program that brings artists and scientists together on a boat sailing for two weeks in the Arctic Ocean.
This was my chance to experience an environment that I had only read about.
My participation in this program came at a moment of doubt, when, once again, I did not know how to continue painting. I decided that I would not paint and I would, instead, use photography to “paint by other means” I made a series of images that capture the strangeness of the Arctic: the absence of night, the sun spinning around the sky all day, the huge scale without referent, the Arctic wildlife, the intense hostile beauty of the environment, the remnants of historic whaling and mining activities.
